The Financial Aid
and Awards Office has limited funds available in the form of short term interest
free loans available to assist University of Manitoba students experiencing
financial difficulties relating to their immediate educational and living
expenses. These
emergency loans cannot be used to cover outstanding tuition
fees, but may assist in dealing with certain unexpected financial emergencies -
eg. a) government student loan has been delayed and student needs funds to pay
rent and/or buy books b) death or serious illness in immediate family out of
town c) books and supplies stolen. Amounts of emergency aid vary according to
the situation, but in most circumstances may not exceed $1,000.00.
In order to be
considered for emergency financial assistance, a student must:
- have obtained a
passing grade ("D" or better) on all courses taken in the previous academic
session (first year students must be making satisfactory progress in their year
to date)
- have documentation
(i.e., notice of government loan assessment letter or other sponsorship letter)
indicating that the student will be receiving sufficient
funding to meet the
educational and living costs for the academic session, as well as the ability to
repay the outstanding emergency loan balance by the end of the academic year
- have repaid all
outstanding emergency aid from previous academic sessions.
Funding for
emergency loans can usually be made available to students within 2-3 days of
application approval. Students who wish to apply for emergency assistance can
